Our primary program is BJJ, however due to our instructors background, we also incorporate in Judo and Trident Jiu-Jitsu as well. This comes with many advantages including the powerful throws of Judo and also the "street style" self defense techniques you will not ordinarily see in competition oriented clubs. That being said, we all love to compete and students are encouraged to enter tournaments to test their skills, this is not required however.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes taking an opponent to the ground and utilizing ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and chokeholds also found in numerous other arts with or without ground fighting emphasis. The premise is that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground.
BJJ permits a wide variety of techniques to take the fight to the ground after taking a grip. Once the opponent is on the ground, a number of maneuvers (and counter-maneuvers) are available to manipulate the opponent into a suitable position for the application of a submission technique. Achieving a dominant position on the ground is one of the hallmarks of the BJJ style, and includes effective use of the guard position to defend oneself from bottom, and passing the guard to dominate from top position with side control, mount, and back mount positions. This system of maneuvering and manipulation can be likened to a form of kinetic chess when utilized by two experienced practitioners. A submission hold is the equivalent of checkmate in the sport, reflecting a disadvantage which would be extremely difficult to overcome in a fight (such as a dislocated joint or unconsciousness).

Judo
Judo or Jūdō (柔道, jūdō?, meaning "gentle way") is a modern martial art and combat sport created in Japan in 1882 by Dr Kano Jigoro. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw or takedown one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a strangle hold or choke. Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defences are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice.
Trident Jiu-Jitsu
The
style of Jiu-Jitsu taught is Ninja-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu, from the lineage of Ninja
Jiu-Jitsu formed by Denis St-Jean and Jules Ladouceur in 1972 after years of
training under local legend and Can-Ryu creator George Sylvain.
The Ninja Jiu-Jitsu Dojo then produced Professor Gerry Marshall, currently 8th Dan who eventually left the Ninja system to create Trident Jiu-Jitsu in the Spring of 2007.
Trident Jiu-Jitsu is a robust Traditional Martial Art involving Judo-style Randori, Throws, Grappling, Strangulations, Restraints, Joint Locks, Controls, Stand Up Fighting and most importantly Situational Self Defense.
As the Art of Ninja-Ryu has evolved, techniques outside of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu such as Kali-Arnis, Penchat Silat, Boxing, Wrestling, Sambo and Kung Fu have been incorporated with relative ease. Making Trident Jiu-Jitsu as well rounded as possible for those seeking quality Self Defense in the Arts.
